THE CANONIZATION :


As we know after John Donne’s clandestine marriage with Anne Moore in 1601, he lost his title and was outcast from his community. This poem is in response to the anger aroused from the same.

 

Canonization is the declaration of a deceased person as an officially recognized saint. Here Canonization is used as a conceit.

 

5 stanzas of 9 lines each.

Rhyme Scheme - abba cccaa

Majority Iambic Pentameter and Tetrameter

Words and meanings:


Stanza 1:


Palsy - Paralysis

Gout - Arthritis


Stanza 2:


Plaguy bill - Death tolls because of Plague

Litigious - Suitable to become the subject of a lawsuit.


Stanza 3:


Tapers - Candle which dies of its own flame

Phoenix - A bird, which renews her youth only when she is burnt alive.


Stanza 4:


Hearse - a vehicle for conveying the coffin at a funeral.

Chronicles - A historical event

Urn - (Kalash in Hindi) A jug like case to hold ashes of a cremated person


Stanza 5:


Hermit - a person living in solitude as a religious discipline.

Hermitage - The place where a hermit lives

Epitomize - be a perfect example of.
